one day solomon decided to humble benaiah ben yehoyada, his most trusted minister.

어느날 솔로몬 왕이 자기가 가장 신임하는 신하인 베나이어 벤 에호야다"의 자존심을 꺾기로 마음먹었다.

왕이 말하길, 베나이어, 그대가 나에게 어떤 반지를 하나를 가져와야겠소.

i wish to wear it for sukkot which gives you six months to find it."

짐이 수콧축제기간에 반지를 껴야겠으니 6개월의 말미를 주겠소.

"if it exists anywhere on earth, your majesty," replied benaiah, "i will find it and bring it to you, but what makes the ring so special?"

폐하, 그런 것이 세상 어디엔가 있기만 하다면 제가 찾아서 올리겠습니다만 그 반지가 무엇이 그리 특별하단말입니까?라고 대답하였다.

"it has magic powers," answered the king. "if a happy man looks at it, he becomes sad, and if a sad man looks at it, he becomes happy."

왕은 이렇게 답했다, "그게 마술적인 힘을 가졌거든, 행복한 사람이 그것을 보게 되면 슬퍼지고, 슬퍼하는 사람이 보면 기분이 좋아지게 만든단 말일세."

solomon knew that no such ring existed in the world, but he wished to give his minister a little taste of humility.

솔로몬 왕은 세상에 그런 반지는 존재하지 않는다는 것을 잘 알고 있었지만 자기의 신하에게 겸손할 줄 아는 자세를 가르치고 싶었다.

spring passed and then summer, and still benaiah had no idea where he could find the ring. on the night before sukkot, he decided to take a walk in one of the poorest quarters of jerusalem.

봄이 가고 여름이 왔지만 베나이어는 어디에서 그런 반지를 찾아야 될 지를 도무지 알 수 없었다. 수콧축제 전날 밤 예루살렘에서 가장 가난한 빈민가를 걸어가 보기로 했다.

he passed by a merchant who had begun to set out the days wares on a shabby carpet. "have you by any chance heard of a magic ring that makes the happy wearer forget his joy and the broken-hearted wearer forget his sorrows?" asked benaiah.

다 낡은 멍석위에 물건을 널어놓으면서 하루의 장사를 위한 전을 펴고 있는 한 상인을 지나쳤다. "행복한 사람이 끼게 되면 그 즐거움을 잊어버리게 만들고, 마음에 상처를 입은 사람이 끼면 그 슬픔을 잊어버리게 하는 마술 반지에 대해 혹시 들어본 적이 있는가?"라고 베나이어가 물었다.

he watched the grandfather take a plain gold ring from his carpet and engrave something on it. when benaiah read the words on the ring, his face broke out in a wide smile.

그 늙은 상인이 멍석 위에서 하나의 평범한 금반지를 집어들었는데 그위에는 어떤 글자가 새겨져 있는 것이 보였다. 베나이어는 반지위에 있는 글을 읽어보는 순간 입이 떡 벌어지는 미소를 지었다.

그날 밤 도시 전체가 수콧축제 분위기로 가득찼다. 솔로몬 왕은 "그래, 친구여, 짐이 찾으로 보냈던 그 물건을 찾았느냐?"고 물었다.

all the ministers laughed and solomon himself smiled. to everyones surprise, benaiah held up a small gold ring and declared, "here it is, your majesty!"

모든 신하들이 웃었고, 솔로몬 왕도 혼자 쓴 미소를 지었다. 모든 사람이 놀랍게도 베나이어는 작은 반지를 치껴들고 외쳤다. "여기 대령했습니다, 폐하!"

as soon as solomon read the inion, the smile vanished from his face. the jeweler had written three hebrew letters on the gold band: gimel, zayin, yud, which began the words "gam zeh yaavor" -- "this too shall pass."

솔로몬 왕이 그 반지에 새겨진 명문을 보는 순간, 얼굴에서 웃음이 사라졌다. 그 반지의 제작자는 금으로 된 표면 위에 히브리어 세 글자를 새겨넣었던 것이다 : 기멜, 자인, 유드-그것은 "감 제 야보르"라는 문장의 첫 글자로서 그 뜻은 "이것 또한 지나가리라"이다.

at that moment solomon realized that all his wisdom and fabulous wealth and tremendous power were but fleeting things, for one day he would be nothing but dust.

그 순간 솔로몬 왕은 자기의 지혜도, 자기가 가진 엄청난 재산도, 어마어마한 권력도 모두 흘러가버릴 물건이며 어느 날 한낱 먼지로 돌아가리라는 것을 깨달았다.
